Types of dampers
This is the most common type of damper used in houses since the 70's.
The only difference is that some were made from cast iron and some from just
sheet metal. Needless to say the ones that were cast iron were able to withstand
the high temperatures of a fire better than there cheaper counter parts.
This type of damper is new to the market and is designed for fireplaces that
do not have sufficient room for the traditional damper shown above or the existing damper
is not replacable. This type of damper should not be your first choice because it
has problems in the winter with freeze-up and will not work well with chimneys that
have two flues.
